Show your Support for Utah’s Net Metering Laws

Utah Clean Energy will present to the Public Utilities and Technology Interim Committee on the value and benefits of Utah’s current renewable energy net metering law to Utah consumers. Utah’s net metering law is being ‘studied’ by the legislature at the request of Rocky Mountain Power – while we are not certain of what, if anything, will happen to net metering, we strongly encourage you to attend this important committee meeting to show your support for Utah’s strong net metering standard. Please see below for more information about net metering.

Background
In 2008, the Utah Legislature adopted Utah’s improved net metering law in 2008 and the Utah Public Service Commission issued an Order (Docket 08-035-78) in February 2009, helping Utah go from an ‘F’ to an ‘A’ for net metering in a national report called ‘Freeing the Grid’. This was a significant step forward and removed a significant barrier to Utahns interested in utilizing renewable energy.

About Utah’s Net Metering Law

  • "Net-metering" is a simplified method of metering the energy consumed and produced at a home or business that has its own renewable energy generator, such as a wind turbine or solar installation.
  • Net metering is for residential, commercial or industrial consumers who own renewable-energy technologies, such as wind turbines or solar panels.
  • Residential customers producing any excess generation are credited kilowatt-hour for kilowatt-hour on a month-to-month basis.  At the end of the annualized billing period, any excess generation credits expire and are granted to the utility.
  • Larger commercial customers with demand charges that produce any excess generation have the option to choose between valuing any excess generation at the avoided cost or an alternative rate determined in conjunction with the Utility and the Commission.
  • The Public Service Commission's Order set Rocky Mountain Power's cap for net-metering overall generating capacity at 20 percent of the 2007 peak demand, up from .01 percent in 2007 (20 percent is equivalent to a little over 900 Megawatts).
  • Utah's net metering participation rates are around 600 customers, representing a little over 1 MW of net metering, or 0.017% of the system cap.
