Utah lags Colorado

Editorial by Michele Burkett
07/29/10

Salt Lake Tribune

CNBC recently ranked “America’s Top States for Business,” using these criteria: work force, economy, education, quality of life, technology, innovation, transportation, cost of living and access to capital (see www.topstatesforbusiness.cnbc.com). Overall, Utah ranks ninth, while neighbor Colorado ranks third. It is possible Colorado will be ranked even higher next year since it has invested nearly $1 billion in wind-turbine factories and reports hiring more than 1,000 people, with hundreds more expected to be hired in the next 18 months.

This exemplifies a huge economic expansion in Colorado and other neighboring states that are embracing our new energy economy. But is it happening here in Utah? No. Why? Because Utah’s current leadership is entrenched in oil, gas and coal.

Gov. Gary Herbert recently released a draft of his energy vision; it places a high priority on fossil fuels industries and shorts our clean energy potential. Colorado will continue to grow, and Utah will fall further and further behind. That is why we need a visionary governor like Peter Corroon, who will pick up where former Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. left off. It’s our job to demand a better future for Utah.
